Shropshire Literary Landscape
09th September 2013
In May 2012, I met with Merlin Unwin Books and freelance editor Margaret Wilson to start work on the book that was to become Nearest Earthly Place to Paradise - The Literary Landscape of Shropshire. This was a fantastic opportunity, not just to practice my photography but to learn more about Shropshire authors and also to explore my home county in some depth.

There are many authors that have produced work incorporating Shropshire into their writing: novels, poems, published diaries, biographies and more. The county has become a part of their theme or plot, or they have written pieces that articulate some of Shropshire's inherent qualities and features. From a range of literary extracts, 54 in total, I have produced pictures with the aim of creating some resonance with the text. For each piece of writing, my objective has been that the image should enhance and complement, producing a picture that is perhaps illustrative but also evocative, revealing at least some of the author’s intentions. The complete book will convey something of the character and nature of Shropshire.
The publishers launch was at Palmers Hall, Ludlow, on Thursday 5th September, when the book also become available for sale through local bookshops and all normal outlets.
Wenlock Books had their own launch party at Wenlock Pottery on Friday 6th September. See copy of Wenlock Books Blog
Burway Books in Church Stretton had a book signing on Saturday 7th September.
